<p>Vanessa Ives is an original character of John Logan's. Other original characters include Ferdinand Lyle, Evelyn Poole, Hecate Poole, and Sir Malcolm Murray, among others.

<p>Ah, but some characters do retain a link to gothic novels. Vanessa is most likely inspired by Lucy Westenra, whom was also the best friend of Mina. Like Vanessa Lucy too eventually falls to Dracula and becomes a vampiric bride, and soon meets her demise. It is true that Vanessa is an original character, but draws her basis and parallels with Lucy.

</p><p>Sean Connery's "Allan Quatermain" is based on the character of the same name from several novels by H. Rider Haggard, in particular KING SOLOMON'S MINES, the first of HRH's novels to feature Quatermain. HRH's novels were very popular and influential.

<p>She is an original character, but I find it interesting that she's a letter writer (we see that she has been writing/ hoarding letters for Mina throughout the years) and she's Miss Ives (missives, or letters)

<p>Penny Dreadful is combination of several classic novels. But the author had made the characters in his own favor. For example, Vanessa plays the role of Mina harker's best friend, who is Lucy in Bram Stoker's "Dracula". What about Ethan Chandler and Malcom Murray then? Malcom Murray is father of Mina, but the closest character I see that he is referred to is Van Helsing, who was also a professor dealing with vampires. The closest charcter to Ethan is Quincey P. In the novel he is just one of the suitors of Lucy. However, in Penny Dreadful Ethan was obviously the only true love of Vanessa. So from here we can understand that John Logan used the charactes in different aspects.
