Showtime is an American premium television network that was launched on July 1, 1976 and is owned by ViacomCBS through its ViacomCBS Domestic Media Networks division's Premium Content Group unit. Mostly, the network airs theatrically released motion pictures and original television series, as well as boxing matches and stand-up comedy specials. The channel is headquartered at Paramount Plaza on the northern end of New York City's Broadway district.

While used by a number of channels and platforms around the world, the Showtime brand primarily refers to the group of eight multiplex channels in the United States. On January 12, 2013, Showtime announced that they had ordered Penny Dreadful straight-to-series. More than three years later, on June 19, 2016, the series concluded. It wouldn't be for another two years, November 1, 2018, before the cable channel announced Penny Dreadful: City of Angels, as a sequel series.
